Single-Session Therapy

Single-session therapy: one focused conversation

Single-session therapy is exactly what it sounds like: one dedicated session to work on a specific issue, without signing up to ongoing weekly counselling. You bring the thing that is on your mind, and we make the most of the time we have.

It is a good option when there is one particular decision, worry or situation you want to think through with someone, rather than an open-ended piece of work.

How single-session therapy works

In single-session therapy we give ourselves one longer, focused block of time, one 2-hour session, to work on whatever you bring. It works much like life coaching in that we stay in the here and now and move together toward a realistic, useful outcome, rather than exploring your whole history.

That does not mean rushing. Having two hours means we can settle in, look properly at what matters, and still reach something you can take away and use. You are in charge of what we focus on. Near the start we agree what you most want to get from the session, and I keep us gently anchored to that so the time is well spent.

We meet by Google Meet, Zoom, or telephone, whichever suits you, and everything we discuss is confidential within the usual professional and ethical limits.

What to expect in your session

We usually start by getting clear on what you most want from our time, so the session has a focus you have chosen. From there we work through it together at a steady pace. I might ask questions to help you see the situation from a different angle, notice what you already know, or weigh up options you have been going back and forth on.

Towards the end we draw things together, so you leave with something concrete rather than a conversation that simply stops. That might be a clearer view of a decision, a small first step to try, or just a calmer, more settled sense of where you stand. What you take away is yours, and there is no expectation to book anything further.

Who single-session therapy suits

This is a good fit if there is one particular thing on your mind and you want a single, dedicated conversation rather than weekly sessions. It suits people who want help with something specific without an open-ended commitment, and people who simply prefer to start small.

It may not be the right choice if what you are carrying is longer-standing or feels too big for one meeting. In that case ongoing counselling, weekly to begin with, usually serves you better, and we can talk about that instead. There is no obligation to book anything at all, and if single-session work isn't right for you, I'll say so. My work is with adults over the age of 18.

One session is often enough to get unstuck. If you later decide you would like to carry on, that door stays open.

Fees

A single session is £110. That covers one 2-hour session together, and your free 20-minute telephone consultation beforehand is always at no charge.

Common questions

How long is a single session?

A single session runs for two hours. That gives us enough time to settle in, focus on what you have brought, and reach something useful you can take away, without it feeling rushed.

What if I need more than one session?

That is completely fine. Single-session therapy is designed to stand on its own, but if you decide you would like to carry on afterwards, we can arrange ongoing counselling. There is no expectation either way.

What kinds of things do people bring to a single session?

Often a specific decision, a worry that keeps circling, or a situation someone wants a clearer head about. If what you are facing feels longer-standing or too big for one meeting, ongoing counselling may suit you better, and we can talk that through first.

How do I book a single session?

Start with a free 20-minute telephone consultation. It lets us check that a single session is the right fit for what you need, and then we arrange a time that works for you.

You don't have to have everything figured out before reaching out.

Choose a time that suits you and take that first step. If it feels easier, you can start with a free 20-minute telephone consultation, a simple, no-pressure conversation to help you decide what's right for you.
