Frequently asked questions

Questions people often ask before getting in touch

If you are thinking about counselling or coaching, you probably have a few practical questions first. Here are honest answers to the ones Rowena is asked most. If yours is not here, the easiest way to ask is a free 20-minute call, and you can book a consultation whenever you feel ready.

Common questions about counselling and coaching

How do I get started?

The first step is a free 20-minute telephone consultation. It is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation to ask questions, tell Rowena a little about what has brought you here, and get a feel for working together. There is no obligation to book anything afterwards. You can arrange it by phone or email whenever you feel ready.

What happens in the free 20-minute consultation?

It is a chance for you to ask questions, tell Rowena a bit about what you are looking for, and get a feel for whether she is the right person to support you. You can talk through how sessions work, fees, and anything you are unsure about. There is no pressure and no obligation to book anything afterwards.

How much do sessions cost?

Online therapy is £60 a session. Single-session therapy is £110 for one focused session. Transitional life coaching is £70 a session, with a four-session minimum. There are no hidden costs, and the free 20-minute telephone consultation is always at no charge.

How will we meet for sessions?

All sessions are online, so you can join from wherever you feel most at ease. Sessions take place by Google Meet, Zoom, or telephone, whichever you are most comfortable with. Rowena is based in Surrey and works with people right across the UK, and sometimes further afield.

How long is a session, and how often will we meet?

Counselling sessions last 60 minutes and usually take place weekly for the first six weeks. That consistency helps build trust and lets the work happen more effectively over time, and you review the pattern together as you go. Single-session therapy works differently, as one longer, focused session on its own.

Who does Rowena work with?

Rowena works with adults over the age of 18, on a wide range of issues from anxiety to bereavement and much more. If you are not sure whether your situation is a good fit, the free consultation is the easiest way to find out.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes. Everything you talk about is confidential, within the usual professional and ethical limits. Rowena is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP, membership 403740) and works to their ethical framework.

Does online counselling work as well as meeting in person?

For most people, yes. Online counselling works just as well as meeting face to face. The relationship and the work are the same, and only the setting changes. Many people find it easier to open up from their own home, with their own things around them and none of the travel.

What is the difference between counselling and coaching?

Counselling gives you space to explore and make sense of what you are feeling, often including the past and how it shapes the present. Transitional life coaching is more forward-looking and practical, for when you are navigating change, such as a career shift or a relationship change, and want to build a clear way forward. There is more detail on the transitional life coaching page.

What can I expect in a first session?

There is nothing you need to prepare. You do not have to have the right words ready or know exactly what you want from counselling yet. You will work together to understand what has brought you and what you would like to achieve. Rowena's role is to listen, to help you feel understood, and to gently support you at your own pace.

What is your cancellation policy?

Rowena operates a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel or reschedule with at least 24 hours' notice, no charge applies. Cancellations made within 24 hours of the session, and missed sessions, are charged at the full session rate. The full detail is in the Terms and Conditions.

What if I need urgent support right now?

This site is not the right place for a crisis. If you need urgent support, please contact the Samaritans free on 116 123, any time of day or night, call NHS 111, or in an emergency call 999. Counselling and coaching are for ongoing support, not immediate crisis care.

You don't have to have everything figured out before reaching out.

Choose a time that suits you and take that first step. If it feels easier, you can start with a free 20-minute telephone consultation, a simple, no-pressure conversation to help you decide what's right for you.
